Bioremediation and Sludge Treatment of Black pit Šandrovac, INA

AEKS successfully executed a comprehensive bioremediation and sludge treatment project at the contaminated Black Pit site in Šandrovac, focused on the recovery and treatment of hydrocarbon waste. Over a 2-year operational period, the project delivered full-scale remediation of one of the most challenging oil-contaminated sites, in alignment with national environmental restoration goals and refinery circular economy initiatives.

Project Scope & Objectives

• Remediation of >5,000 tons of hydrocarbon-contaminated sludge
• Recovery of valuable oil fractions for reintegration into the client’s refinery process
• Environmental risk reduction and long-term site stabilization

The goal was not only to reduce environmental liabilities, but also to maximize the recovery of usable hydrocarbons, significantly offsetting disposal costs and reducing waste generation.
